Whilst using any good mobile betting app, you’ll will notice you can bet on a wide range of sports from all over the world.

With the growth in the number of sports to bet on across the globe you can be assured that there is always another game preparing to start as one finishes. This is especially noticeable when you often browse the In-Play sections of any iPhone or Android betting app.

In this article we look at betting on Basketball on your mobile to give you a feel of how the market works.

Basketball Introduction

With a sport like football the odds tend to hinge on few instances during the course of the game, like a goal or a sending off, and the movements can be huge when these occur.

On the other side of the pond our American cousin favour instant gratification which is epitomised in a sport like basketball more than any other where there is a steady and gradual accumulation of points during the course of a game.

As the scoring of points is much different to a football game then so is the movement in odds. There can be sharp swings in points during the course of a game where one team is on top only for that to reverse in the next spell. In addition, games can and do go down to the wire, and we mean the very last second of the game. And with this being a US sport there are no draws so there will be a winner on the night, and games that go into overtime offer more opportunity to profit.

Basketball Markets to trade

With the large choice of markets to choose from for a game it is hard to know where to start. Therefore, for the novice bettor we would recommend that they keep it simple and stick to the Game Winner market and not get sucked into the various other markets on offer. As is the case for most markets these days you will find that they ability to bet in-play makes this more exciting.

Another one of the safer markets to trade is the outright winner of the championship, as invariably this will come from one of the pre-season favourites so bettors can narrow down their selections to one or two teams from the handful of favourites.

Over time as betting experience is gained then bettors can start taking a look at some of the other markets on offer. Here, are recommendations would be to bet on the Total Points or the Team Total Points. The points handicap would also be worth a look.

Basketball Coverage

The place to view NBA games in the UK is on ESPN, and for those based in London then a trip to the O2 centre in North Greenwich is worth a visit when the NBA stars make their way over for a regular season game.

For those of us who are used to playing fantasy football and use this in conjunction with football betting to apply knowledge of the game then fantasy basketball is also a useful way to learn more about the sport. Again, ESPN is the place to do this via their website and it is also the place to find all of the stats.

NBA.tv is a free app to download which provides highlights of games.

The good thing about basketball is that the games come thick and fast during the season.

Basketball Odds

As with football home advantage can play a big part in basketball, but there are also a few other factors which can affect odds:

<ul
The MVP factor: teams with the star players tend to do well, so look out for the points scored and rebounds stats of key players.

Team Form: as with most sports, teams can have good and bad spells so recognise which team is where in the form cycle and bet accordingly.

Team News: if a team is over-reliant on its key player then keep a look out for injuries or other distractions which may affect performance and therefore odds.

Team Motivation: as is the case with mid-table teams towards the end of the football season that have nothing to play for, there will be cases of performances dwindling come the end of the season if they have no chance of making the playoffs.

The Bench: as with football the bench plays a big part in basketball. Frequently there are times when the introduction of a bench player can swing the points in the favour of his team in a short space of time.

Where to bet

William Hill is the clear leader in basketball markets in particular for the NBA, both in terms of odds and number of markets available. Stan James Mobile also have a good range of Basketball betting markets, especially for In-Play events.

NBA format

The NBA has 30 teams which are split into 6 divisions, with there being 3 divisions in each of the Western and Eastern conferences. Each team plays 82 games in the regular season, splits as follows: 16 games against teams from their division and 36 games against teams from the other two divisions in their conference. The other 30 games are played against teams from the other conference.

The top eight teams from each conference qualify for the 16-team play-offs, made up of the 6 divisional winners plus 5 of the next best from each conference. These 16-teams come together to contest a knock-out tournament.

As the curtain comes down on the 2011/12 season there is still plenty of unfinished business to be settled…

The Title stays in Manchester but where exactly?

Man City are favourites to take the title thanks to their superior goal difference of +8 over Man United. This is reflected in the odds with Stan James and Sky Bet offering a massive, but unlikely, 7.00 on Man United to retain their title.

One relegation spot still to be decided

With Wolves and Blackburn already down there is one spot yet to be decided. Bolton currently lie two points adrift of QPR and three points adrift of Aston Villa before taking into account a far inferior goal difference. They are currently priced at 1.36 with both William Hill and Sky Bet to be relegated.

3rd and 4th place playoff

Two points separate Arsenal, Spurs and Newcastle who lie in 3rd, 4th and 5th place respectively. As 6th place Chelsea could claim the last remaining Champions League spot by beating Bayern Munich in the final next weekend then only the team in 3rd place is assured of a place in the elite European competition.

William Hill have the most comprehensive list of bets here with a bet offered for each of 3rd place, 4th place and 5th place. Arsenal are priced at 1.44 to clinch 3rd and separately Spurs are priced at 1.57 to finish the season in 4th. They are also offering a tricast on correctly naming the 3rd, 4th and 5th place teams as a single bet.

Which Promoted Team will finish highest in the table?

With the early season favourites for this title, QPR, still very much involved in a fight for survival the path is clear for either Norwich or Swansea to take the honours with both lying on 44 points each. There is an 8-goal advantage in Swansea’s favour and both teams end the season with a home tie. Norwich have the easier looking tie of these.

Stan James are offering 1.73 on Norwich to finish ahead and 2.00 on Swansea to finish ahead. Meanwhile Betfair have the odds on this market switched the other way round with 1.84 available on Swansea and 2.08 on Norwich.

Goals Spree

With so much at stake and so much up for grabs expect their to be goals. Paddy Power have some specials on the amount of goals to be scored.

They are offering a massive 156.00 on all 20 teams to score on Sunday.

Last season there were 5 clean sheets and 32 goals scored on the final day. The average number of goals last season and this season has been 2.8 goals per game. This would work out at 28 goals per weekend. Paddy Power are offering the following bets on the Combined Total Goals this weekend:

2.75 for 28 goals or less.
2.62 for 29-33 goals inclusive.
2.62 for 34 goals or more.

The Man City vs. QPR game is the favourite to be the Match With Most Goals, with odds of 6.00. The Chelsea vs. Blackburn game is also tempting at 8.00.

So, as you can see, there’s still alot to play for on the final day of the Premier League. For more football coverage see our analysis of the 2012 Champions League Final.

As the Chicago Bulls are dumped out by the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round there is still everything to play for as the Denver Nuggets take on the LA Lakers.

Latest NBA Results

The Eastern Conference produced a shock result as the Philadelphis 76ers convincingly beat the top-seeded Chicago Bulls in a first round tie of the Playoffs. The 76ers beat the Bulls 79-78 in the sixth game which was decided in the dying moments. There were only 2 seconds left on the clock as Denver’s Iguodala hit two free throws and then blocked a 3-point attempt from CJ Watson at the death which sent the Bulls crashing out. This gives the 76ers their first victory in a playoff tie since 2003, and they now go on to play the Boston Celtics in the second round where they will yet again be underdogs.

First Round Decider

In the Western Conference, the Denver Nuggets won the sixth game of the best of seven series against the LA Lakers, the tie will now go down to a decider on 12-May where the Lakers will have home court advantage. Even though the Lakers are favourites, 1.33 with William Hill, to progress to the second round they will have their work cut out to reach the NBA Finals as they will likely face two tough tests along the way.

A win against the Nuggets will set up a second round tie against the Oklahoma City Thunder the winner of this will likely face the San Antonio Spurs in the final of the Western Conference. As the Lakers have struggled to shake off the threat posed by the Nuggets, Oklahoma and San Antonio have both convincingly won their first round ties 4-0. Due to this the Lakers have drifted out and now stand at 9.0 with William Hill to win the Western Conference final.

Shock news often creates great opportunity to profit from sports betting – but only those that are fast enough to act can benefit. That’s why using your mobile gives you an advantage over those using their computers.

This article is part of The Mobile Betting Edge series on MobileBetting.co.uk that looks at how betting on your mobile gives you an advantage.

In this article will look at a recent example of shock news hitting a market. The Betfair market is ‘Next England Manager’ and the shock news was that Roy Hodgson has been approached by the FA.

React Fast & Profit with Mobile Betting

Where were you on Sunday evening, April 29th 2012 as the news broke that the FA had contacted Roy Hodgson about the England post? Once this news broke there was a large window of opportunity from which to profit but this window was closing fast. Only those with a mobile betting account would’ve been able to react quick enough in order to profit.

Event and Market
Football Specials and Next England Manager. Run by Betfair who had a market on the next official manager of the England national team as announced by the FA, in the absence of an official announcement it would be decided by whoever is in charge for England’s opening game at Euro 2012 against France on 11-June. Note: the inclusion of this date is important as it places a back-stop date for when the market will be settled.

Background
Harry Redknapp was immediately installed as the favourite to take over as the England manager ever since Fabio Capello resigned from the post earlier in the year. By some weird coincidence, announcement of Capello’s decision to step down came on the same day that Redknapp was cleared of tax evasion charges after a long drawn out battle that culminated in frequent court appearances.

Having previously been overlooked for the job it seemed that everything was coming together for Redknapp to takeover in time for Euro 2012. He fitted the bill as an Englishman, he was the people’s favourite and is loved by the media and the bookies did not disagree either. Redknapp starting odds to takeover as the Next England Manager were around 2.00, and shortened to as low as 1.30.

Procrastination from the FA
There was little noise from the FA as to how they were going to proceed; they quietly installed Stuart Pearce as a caretaker as they procrastinated behind closed doors. All the while Redknapp maintained the rhetoric that he was open to the position but had heard no word from the FA. This created uncertainty and seemed to negatively affect Spurs’ season as they let slip a 2-0 lead at the Emirates and not soon after they gave up 3rd and then 4th spot in the league. Talk of challenging for the title had quietened to a deathening silence, and Redknapp’s odds for the England job were widening but he still remained the clear favourite.

The Shock News
Hodgson was not on the radar; his odds had come in to around 9.0 from astronomical levels but was not being widely touted for the job, aside from the odd journalist such as Patrick Barclay who was also suggesting Glen Hoddle. It goes without saying that when the FA broke the news it came as a shock and news like this creates great opportunity when betting on the exchanges.

The Opportunity to Profit
There was a clear opportunity on the Sunday evening to back Hodgson after the news had broken at odds greater than 2.00, and by far the quickest way to do so was via a mobile phone. Examples like this just come to highlight that Mobile Betting is the way of the future. Can you imagine trying to get into a betting shop to place that bet, or waiting for your PC or laptop to load up. By waiting you would have missed the window as by the end of the day Hodgson’s odds had dropped to 1.30.

This article is part of The Mobile Betting Edge series on MobileBetting.co.uk that looks at how betting on your mobile gives you an advantage.

Bayern Munich will be aiming to lift the premier European competition for the fifth time and keep the cup for good, meanwhile Chelsea will be ecstatic just to take temporary ownership as they seek to lift the trophy for the first time in their history…

In this article MobileBetting.co.uk gives a pre-match analysis and offers some suggestions for betting on you iPhone, Android or other mobile device.

The Teams – Bayern Munich

As one of the biggest teams in German football Bayern are a well known name across Europe. They suffered heartache in one of the greatest European Cup Finals of all time when they let slip a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 in injury time of the 1999 final against Manchester United.

Bayern did recover from this defeat two years later to take the 2001 final which is their last victory in the competition.

They will be hoping that history repeats itself as it has been two years since they lost the final to Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan.

The Teams – Chelsea

Chelsea also have a claim at having taken part in one of the great European Cup Finals of modern times when they contested a fabulously attacking affair in the 2008 final with fellow English outfit Manchester United. They too suffered heartache at the hands of the Red Devils as captain John Terry missed the vital penalty in the shoot-out which would’ve won the cup for the Blues but instead they lost on sudden death.

There is no chance of a reprieve for Terry though as he is suspended from the final after being sent off in an epic encounter with Barcelona in the 2nd leg of the semi-final.

The Odds

Bayern Munich will be playing the final on home turf as UEFA already had decided to hold it at Olympic Stadium in Munich before Bayern sealed their place by knocking out Real Madrid in the semi-finals. It is therefore unsurprising to find that Bayern are favourites to lift the trophy and find themselves priced at 1.47 to do so by any means on Betfair or 1.83 with Paddy Power to win within 90 mins.

Chelsea old boy Arjen Robben is priced at 2.50 with Paddy Power to score at any time in 90 mins against his former club, with Chelsea’s designated penalty taker Frank Lampard is priced at 5.0 with Sky Bet to repeat his feat from the 2008 final by scoring in 90 mins.

Over the past ten finals the average number of goals scored in the final has been 2.8. The two outliers are when an all-Italian affair between AC Milan and Juventus resulted in a somewhat predictable 0-0 scoreline in 2003 and when Liverpool defied all expectations by overturning a 3-0 half time scoreline to level it up at 3-3 after 90 mins in the 2005 final.

Of these ten finals, there have been either 2 or 3 goals scored on 7 occasions, Paddy Power have priced this scenario at 1.91.

Three of the last ten finals have gone all the way to penalties and Sky Bet price this scenario at 5.50.

For bonus hunters we recommend Betfred Mobile because of their £50 free bet. But those simply looking for the best iPhone/Android experience then it’s William Hill all the way.

Stan James has excellent odds offered across a wide range of markets including wide reaching In Play markets.

They lag slightly behind William Hill in terms of its Mobile Betting app which lacks some of the functionality that appears on its website such as the In-Play stats, however we would expect this to improve over time as they take their mobile offering seriously.

The biggest and most hyped fight of the year takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 5th, as the undefeated...

The biggest and most hyped fight of the year takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 5th, as the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr takes on Migual Cotto for his WBA Light Middleweight Championship belt.

The Fighters – Mayweather

Floyd Mayweather Jr, 35, is undefeated in his 42 bouts with 26 coming by way of knockout, and against Cotto he will be stepping up from his usual 147lb weight category to 154lbs. This is not the first time that Mayweather has fought in this category as he successfully beat Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya back in 2007 to take his WBC crown.

Mayweather has a short stint in prison to look forward to shortly after the fight takes place which was delayed to allow him to fight Cotto. But don’t be fooled into thinking that this will affect the fighters state of mind and have any bearing on the outcome of the fight. Mayweather is no stranger to controversy as his frequent bust-ups with his father and former trainer, Floyd Sr, highlight. It is almost as if Mayweather incites this in order to motivate himself.

It his father that is accredited with moulding the fighter into a world beater by teaching him the quick, counterpunch style that has become his hallmark.

The Fighters – Cotto

Miguel Cotto has two defeats on his record and is 37-2 going into the fight with Mayweather which will be his third defence of the WBA crown. The last of these defeats came in 2009 when he lost to Manny Pacquiao in a 12th round technical knockout, which was at a catch weight of 145lbs to accommodate the smaller Pacquiao.

Cotto avenged his other defeat at the hands of Antonio Margarito last December by stopping him in a 10th round technical knockout. Cotto is known for landing big punches to the body but he will need to get close to Mayweather in order to be in a position to unleash these.

The Fight

Any fighter can land a lucky punch but if the fight goes as it should on paper the bookmakers seem to have priced this one right by making Mayweather the overwhelming favourite. Mayweather himself says that he is merely putting the finishing touches to his legacy which may explain why the much talked about fight with Pacquiao has not materialised. Would he really want to risk his undefeated record, surely it would be better to fight lesser boxers that are not in the same class?

That’s one view, but let’s remember that Mayweather dominated Victor Ortiz in the opening three rounds of their bout last September, before landing the sucker punch in the 4th to win by knockout. Ortiz was the younger fighter and also quick but was still no match for Mayweather.

Equally, Cotto has a lot to do in order to test May weather’s legacy and force the first defeat of his professional career.

The Odds, Betting On Your Mobile

The bookmakers do not see Mayweather stepping up 7lbs as a problem and have Floyd as the overwhelming favourite so there is not much value to be had in the Match Odds market, unless that is you are of the opinion that Cotto can cause an upset.

For his 42 wins, Mayweather has 26 knockout (about 62%). Mayweather failed to stop De La Hoya when he last fought at this weight winning on a points decision. So if you think that Mayweather will play his usual defence-like style and stay clear of Cotto’s body shots, and that he lacks the knockout power to take out Cotto then maybe the Go The Distance or the Method of Result markets are worth looking at.

Odds on a Mayweather victory by decision go up to 1.83 with William Hill, which compares to only 1.14 when betting on a Mayweather victory by any means. The equivalent odds with Ladbrokes are 1.16 and 1.91, so they are slightly more competitive on this event.

Sky Bet are offering more markets on this bout including Either Fighter to Win on Points priced at 1.57.

Liverpool and Chelsea will contest the 131st FA Cup this Saturday - mobilebetting.co.uk is here to help you place a winning bet on your mobile.

Liverpool and Chelsea will contest the 131st FA Cup, the time may have moved to a 5:15pm kick-off but the history and tradition remains with the world’s oldest cup competition…

The Teams – Liverpool

This will be Liverpool 14th appearance in an FA Cup final and they will looking to add to their 7 previous victories. The last time they were here was in 2006 when they won one of the best cup finals of all time on penalties after a stunning last gasp strike from Steven Gerrard made it 3-3 and took the game into extra time.

They will be looking to add the FA Cup to the League Cup that they have already won this season and make up for yet another disappointing season in the league.

The Teams – Chelsea

Chelsea have their own history in this competition and will be making their 11th appearance with 6 prior wins, including 3 wins in 4 years between 2007 and 2010.

This will be the start of a massive couple of weeks for the Blues as they look to steal 4th spot in the league before taking on Bayern Munich in the Champions League Final on May 19th.

Fernando Torres

Liverpool come into the game having won the previous three league games between the two sides (one at home and two away). In the first of these Fernando Torres scored twice to give Liverpool a 2-0 win at Anfield but it was all change when the two sides met again in the return fixture at Stamford Bridge. In January 2011 Torres had moved to Chelsea for a British Record £50m and was rather ineffective as Chelsea lost. When he left the field the Liverpool fans who had so often cheered as he was scoring 65 goals for their club were now jeering as he was seen as a traitor.

Since that day many a pundit has written off Torres as a has been. That was until a week ago when a goal from the Spaniard helped Chelsea secure their place in their second ever Champions League final by knocking out Barcelona in the semis. Torres may be hitting form at just the right time for his new club as he went on to hit a hat-rick in the subsequent game against QPR.

Torres is looking a tasty 3.10 to score at any time during 90 mins with Paddy Power. Alternatively, as he is not guaranteed to start then he could be worth a punt at 7.5 to be the last goalscorer.

The Odds

Chelsea have been installed as favourites to lift the cup come May 5th and are priced at 1.74 on Betfair to do so by any means.

Didier Drogba has a great goalscoring record at Wembley stadium, scoring in each of his last three FA Cup Finals with the Blues. A repeat of his stunning strike which opened the scoring against Spurs in the semi-final is priced at 6.50 with Sky Bet’s First Goalscorer market. Alternatively he is priced at 2.70 with Paddy Power to score at any time during 90 mins.

Paddy Power are leading the goal scoring markets for the Final and are offering an Insurebet on the First Goalscorer which means that if the player fails to score the first goal but does score during the game then they will return the stake. Drogba is 5.0 under this option.

If you expect the start to the game to be a rather drab affair which is often the case when two so-called big teams contest the final then Paddy Power are offering 2.0 on the first goal to be scored after the 28th minute (note: this is a losing bet if the game finishes 0-0 after 90 mins).
